Our Lymphoedema Program

Our comprehensive program is designed to help reduce the symptoms of lymphoedema and provide you with ongoing education and skills to help you manage lymphoedema in your daily life.

Lymphoedema services can be accessed via two avenues:

  1. As an outpatient: Make a 1-hour appointment with a therapist for assessment, treatment, and education.
  2. For intensive treatment over a set period: See our rehabilitation consultant, Dr Grace Leong, for a comprehensive medical assessment and recommendations about attending for a "decongestive program". It may be recommended that patients attend as an admitted inpatient, where they have access to nursing care and medical monitoring. Patients may be better suited to a day program during which they attend the hospital each day for therapy. Patients from destinations outside of greater Sydney MAY be eligible to access the "self-care accommodation" on site at Mount Wilga.

Your program may include:

  • Education regarding skin hygiene to prevent infection.
  • Lymphatic massage to manually drain the lymphatic system.
  • Bandaging using graduated pressure to ensure reduction of the limb size.
  • Exercise prescription to assist with the flow of lymph in the body.
  • Self-management strategies.
  • Prescription and fitting of a pressure garment
  • Occupational Therapy to assist with activities of daily living, relaxation, and energy conservation.
  • Dietetics for education and advice regarding nutrition and weight management.
  • Psychology for education and advice on coping skills, stress management and relaxation.

Lymphoedema is the swelling of a limb due to the accumulation of excess lymph fluid in the tissues. It can be caused by:

  • Issues with the development or formation of lymphatic tissue
  • Following surgical removal of lymph nodes
  • Radiotherapy to lymph nodes
  • Filariasis - a tropical disease
  • Trauma or burns

Your rehabilitation care will be managed by a Lymphoedema Rehabilitation Specialist. Depending on your individual needs, members of your rehabilitation team will involve allied health professionals from:

  • Lymphoedema physiotherapy
  • Lymphoedema occupational therapy
  • Exercise physiology
  • Dietetics
  • Social work
  • Psychology

A GP referral is required for our inpatient and day programs. Your GP can fax the referral to 02 9847 5286 or email it to Referral.MWP@ramsayhealth.com.au and an appointment will be made for you.

If you would like to have a consultation with one of our Lymphoedema Therapists as an Outpatient, a GP referral is not required.

Our admissions team will check with your private health fund to make sure you are fully covered (whether you are staying as an inpatient or attending our day program). If you are not privately insured, we will provide a quote for the costs of the program. Please be aware that any consumables, garments and equipment, if recommended, are an additional cost to you personally.

Outpatient appointments attract a consultation fee that may attract a rebate from your private health insurance extras. Please contact us for a quotation.

Discharge from the lymphoedema inpatient program will occur when your limb size has reduced sufficiently and you have been fitted with your compression garment. Follow up may be arranged for you with the lymphoedema team as an outpatient and you will be advised of other outpatient services which will help in maintaining overall fitness and wellbeing.

Accredited Lymphoedema Therapists at Ramsay Health Plus, located at Mt Wilga Private Hospital, will work with you to reduce your lymphoedema symptoms. They also provide people with long-term education and skills to help manage their lymphoedema in their daily life.
