Orthopaedic & Musculoskeletal Program

Orthopaedic & musculoskeletal rehabilitation program

Mt Wilga's orthopaedic and musculoskeletal rehabilitation program is designed to enhance your recovery and help you regain independence following orthopaedic surgery, such as hip and knee replacement, spinal surgery or other orthopaedic injury.  The program is also designed to improve your functional ability if you are suffering from rheumatoid or osteoarthritis or other conditions of the bone/joint/muscle system.

As a day patient your rehabilitation team will formulate a treatment plan for you based on your individual needs and from an assessment by a Rehabilitation Physician.

Day patients attend 1 – 5 times per week as deemed appropriate. Your program will be scheduled by the Day Rehabilitation Coordinator.

Your rehabilitation program may include the following services:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Feldenkrais
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Exercise Physiology gym programs
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Post joint replacement hip / knee program
  • Spine care class
  • Falls prevention program

Physiotherapy

Your physiotherapy program will be coordinated by a physiotherapist with training and interest in treating orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions. Your program will be aimed at improving:

  • The strength and movement of your operated/injured limb
  • Your balance
  • Your mobility
  • Your flexibility and endurance

Individual and group exercise, gym work and hydrotherapy will form the basis of your program.

Occupational therapy

Your Occupational Therapy program will assist you in regaining your former level of independence and help you return to your normal routine. Your program may include assessment and training in:

  • Personal care activities
  • Functional movement
  • Household tasks
  • Home safety assessment
  • Prescription of aids to help you maintain your independence
  • Driver education

Post joint replacement program

The post joint replacement program is designed for patients who have undergone a hip or knee replacement.

The program is coordinated by the physiotherapy department and incorporates both the physiotherapy and exercise physiology team. Hip and Knee Groups are designed to maximise patients rehabilitation potential following a hip or knee replacement.

  • Therapy is attended with a small group of other hip and knee patients.
  • Therapy is conducted according to your clinical / surgeons requirements.
  • Therapy may include hip and knee class, gym class and hydrotherapy class.
  • A Physiotherapist and Exercise Physiologist work with patients to ensure that maximal range of motion and strength in the operated limb is achieved and that exercises, walking aids and walking patterns are progressed as appropriate.
  • A sense of camaraderie within the groups encourages participants and consistent allocation of therapist to the groups facilitates careful monitoring of progress and patient outcomes achieved.

Spine care class

Spine care class is a comprehensive education program designed to address the many issues related to care of the spine and dealing with back pain.

It is run by a multidisciplinary team who has had considerable experience in the area of spine care including:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Psychology
  • Occupational therapy
  • Dietetics
  • Feldenkrais

The program contains the following sessions:

  • How the back works / Core stability
  • Principles of back Care
  • Goal setting and pacing
  • Exercising for fitness and stretching
  • Healthy eating
  • Static postures
  • Easy moving
  • Dynamic postures
  • Cognitive behaviour therapy / Pain management

The program provides you with knowledge to effectively manage and control your condition and to implement lifelong changes in how you look after your back whilst you participate in your daily activities.
